Preventive Care

While practicing good oral hygiene is important, it’s just as important to visit the dentist at least twice a year for a dental cleaning and exam. Since the mouth and body are connected, keeping your mouth healthy helps to keep your body healthy. Therefore, we feel it’s important to educate our patients on proper nutrition and dietary habits, brushing and flossing techniques, and overall oral health including periodontal disease (gum disease).

There are many documented links between oral hygiene and diabetes, heart disease and low birth weight babies. As much as 80% of the adult population in the U.S. has some level of periodontal disease. We believe the first step to a healthy body is a disease-free mouth. We offer many preventive services to help you achieve optimal oral health.

Our Preventive Care Services:

  • Dental cleanings and exams
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Dental sealants
  • Mouthguards
  • Night guards
  • Breath treatment
  • Oral cancer screenings with VIZILITE ©

Periodontal disease, more commonly referred to as gum disease, is often a silent condition. Symptoms may not appear until an advanced stage of the disease. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and other health problems.

Research has linked gum disease to other health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, some forms of cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Millions of people have gum disease and aren’t aware of it. Once you have periodontal disease, like diabetes, it doesn’t go away. It is a lifelong condition that can have a systemic effect on your overall health, but it can be maintained or stabilized through a periodontal maintenance program.

Warning signs of periodontal disease include: red, swollen or tender gums or other pain in your mouth; bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food; receding gums that are pulling away from teeth; and, persistent bad breath.

We believe in early screening for signs and symptoms of oral cancer. These signs and symptoms can go undetected by the patient for years. The five-year survival rate of 50% has not changed in decades because most oral cancers are not detected until they have advanced to stage 3 or stage 4. Risk factors for oral cancer increases with age, tobacco usage, alcohol consumption, exposure to HPV and past history of other forms of cancer. However, 25% of patients diagnosed with oral cancer have no known risk factors.

To help diagnose oral cancer earlier, we have Vizilite technology that helps detect cellular changes up to five years sooner than the naked eye alone. Vizilite uses technology that has been proven successful in identifying soft tissue abnormalities in other areas of the body. Oral cancer is one of the most curable diseases when it’s caught early. ViziLite technology is quick and easy, and could help save your life.

Using a custom-fit mouthguard during sports or athletic activities can protect you from dental damage. Different sports involve different levels of risk and potential injury. Custom-fit mouthguards cushion blows and falls to the jaw and can help to prevent concussions, jaw fracture and tooth damage. Because they are fitted specifically for you, they offer the best protection and comfort, especially if you wear braces or have any other dental restoration. Avoid serious injury and/or costly reconstructive dental services with this easy to use appliance.

Bruxism (grinding) and clenching of your teeth are often subconscious habits. Most people are unaware of these para-functional habits until damage to the teeth leads to pain and discomfort. Soreness can present in teeth, muscles of the face, Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) or as recurring headaches. These symptoms are the result of undiagnosed or untreated damage to your teeth.

Dr. Lisa Mulkin can help spot warning signs before symptoms develop. A properly constructed custom nightguard can help you sleep better and prevent extensive, avoidable dental damage. While over-the-counter nightguards can protect the teeth but may cause damage in other ways or make matters worse.

Fluoride is clinically proven to strengthen teeth and prevent tooth decay for both adults and children. At Lake Country Dental, we offer a topical fluoride treatment to strengthen tooth enamel and remineralize soft spots on teeth for patients of all ages. You can receive a fluoride treatment in our office with your dental cleaning and exam. Our hygienist will paint the fluoride varnish onto your teeth. No matter your age, fluoride has been proven to protect your teeth against decay.
