TMD/TMJ

Dr. Mulkin has completed advanced training to identify and treat Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). Quite often referred to as TMJ, TMD affects your jaw's Temporomandibular Joint and muscle of mastication (the muscles involved with chewing), which can lead to headaches, pain in the ear, neck shoulders and face. Popping or clicking of your jaw when you chew is a sign of TMJ deterioration. Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder can also cause tooth loss as undue strain is placed on the teeth and supporting structures.

To help us detect TMD, Dr. Mulkin is certified to use Joint Vibration Analysis—an accurate, fast and non-invasive way to screen patients for TMJ health. The JVA screening helps Dr. Mulkin make an accurate diagnosis of TMJ/TMD and, if present, demonstrates the severity level of the disorder.

There are several ways TMD can be treated. Dr. Mulkin will evaluate and recommend the best treatment to help relieve the discomfort or pain associated with TMD. Solutions can be as basic as modifying the shape of one tooth to creating an ideal alignment of your teeth. Night guards and other dental appliances can help to alleviate the progression of TMD.
